The next “Move to Lose” class starts on September 4 and takes place from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Cardiac Rehabilitation at the UVM Medical Center, located at 62 Tilley Drive in South Burlington. The cost of the program is $300 for non-the UVM Medical Center employees and $225 for the UVM Medical Center employees. For additional information or to register, please call 802-847-4514.
There are many hidden gems at the University of Vermont Medical Center, but one that is particularly near and dear to my heart is the Move to Lose program.
“Move to Lose” is a weight loss program for individuals who have a medical risk associated with their need for weight loss. In reality, this includes most people who need and want to lose weight when you consider that 70 percent of chronic diseases are associated with obesity.
“Move to Lose” is a 16-week, behavior change-based weight-loss program that includes a four-month gym membership in our cardiac rehab gym in South Burlington. It is one of few programs led by a registered dietician who is trained in behavioral weight-loss management (and who is also an avid exerciser!). An exercise physiologist or a nurse counsels each participant on how to maximize his or her own individual exercise program for maximum caloric expenditure (burning calories!). Research shows that a continued exercise program is the key to losing weight and keeping it off.
I have had the pleasure of facilitating the nutrition education portion of the “Move to Lose” program for the past six years as the registered dietitian. We meet every Thursday night from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Each week we cover a variety of topics, including:
- Exercise journaling;
- Eating patterns;
- Eating triggers;
- Eating environment; and
- Understanding nutrition for today’s health needs.
The class is dynamic and interactive. For me, one of the most exciting parts is watching the group really come together over the 16 weeks into what becomes a small community of people who are focused on their health. The story of each person’s journey through our 16-week program is inspiring. I have seen folks make small changes with profound results, try foods that they never thought they would see on their plates, and accomplish some impressive changes in their physical fitness.
Sign up today to join a community focused on health, gain access to our gym, and receive a personalized exercise program, enjoy weekly social support on learning new habits, taste some new foods, lose weight – and have some fun through it all.
See you in class!
