Hi everyone,

It’s me, Monty the Moose—official mascot of our University of Vermont Children’s Hospital back with another blog by moose and popular demand. It sure has been nice to see the sun and feel the warmer weather! Winter is gone, summer is here!

With the change of seasons, I have been thinking about all the activities that we will be participating in over the next few months and want to share with you some of my favorite safety tips to keep us all healthy and enjoying our activities so here goes:

First, please always wear a helmet when doing any wheeled activities—biking, skateboarding, riding a scooter, in-line skating.  Also wear protective gear such as protective wrist, elbow and kneepads.  Have you ever seen a moose ride a bike?  It is one of my goals to learn how to ride a bike and you can rest assured that I will have a helmet that meets the Consumer Product Safety Commission standards as I do not want to injure my head.  Now where will I find a bike that fits me? That’s another important safety consideration since you want to have a bike that’s not too big and not too small but just right—meaning feet flat on the ground and handlebars no higher than the shoulders.

Sunscreen is a must, even when the sun is hidden behind the clouds.  Since I spend a lot of time outdoors, I put sunscreen on first thing in the morning and reapply as needed throughout the day and always after I go for swim. I always use sunscreen of at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor) and higher.  Wearing a hat is also recommended, see I have mine on with the special cut-outs for my antlers.

I like to swim on hot days, the cool water makes me feel so muuuuch better, but I never swim alone.  I always have a buddy with me and we always have an adult watching us at all times.  Speaking of being in the water, I am also looking forward to boat rides with my family this summer, I have my new life jacket and it fits me perfectly.  It took trying on at least five personal flotation devices to get the one that fit best, but I finally found one that wasn’t too loose and fastened securely. had   It is bright orange so everyone will see me  and know I am wearing it to be safe. .  Our family has a rule that everyone, adults and children, have to always wear their approved personal flotation device while boating.  We want to be safe.

Staying hydrated is also very important, I drink a lot of water in hot weather….what is your favorite beverage to stay hydrated in the summer?  When I have been most active on the warm days, I like coming inside for some quite activity to cool down with a little rest and some fresh water before going back outside to play.  I do not want to get heat exhaustion and then feel ill and staying hydrated will certainly help prevent that from happening

Hope these safety tips help you as much as they help me. Have a great Summer and please stay safe!
