Kiwi fruit has a sweet-tart flavor unlike any other fruit. Some say it is reminiscent of pineapple or a strawberry. Individuals with latex allergies should beware of kiwifruit, which contains similar compounds to bananas and avocados and which can induce a latex-fruit allergy when eaten.

In the Kitchen

Kiwi is excellent eaten alone or in fruit or green salads. It is a good accompaniment to chicken and fish. Try kiwi in the New Zealand dessert, Pavlova.

In the Garden

Kiwi is cultivated in both California and New Zealand. Only hardy varieties are able to grow in northern climates and their fruits are smaller and hairless compared to the kiwi varieties in the market.

One kiwi contains more potassium than a banana and more Vitamin C than an orange.

  • 2cupsvanilla yogurt
  • 2kiwis, peeled and sliced
  • 1banana, sliced
  • 1cupstrawberries, whole
  • 3/4cupblackberries
  • 4Tbspwheat germ
